Tips for Choosing A Good Handyman

A handyman also known as handy person is someone who gets paid to do various household chores and repairs. The range of skills a handyman has varies greatly from person to person. A handyman can do odd jobs such as lawn work or raking leaves. They can also do minor home repair or improvements such as painting. The search for the right handyman starts with you.

f you simply need someone to paint a room, hiring a professional who has woodworking skills and electrical knowledge might prove to be more costly. If you have a laundry list of items that need work however, choosing one who has a range of skills well suited to your list may save time and money. Ask detailed questions about their experience.

Getting references is important. There are many stories of disastrous labor experiences from shoddy work to outright theft. Ensuring your handyman is trustworthy and well respected is essential in ensuring a good job. The best way to find a quality worker is by referral. Many handymen stay busy simply on word of mouth referrals from happy customers. Talk to neighbors, family, and friends to see if they have had positive experiences.

Get a written estimate that includes the price and time for completion. Unscrupulous handymen may give a verbal estimate and when it’s time to pay come up with a list of things that raised the price higher than expected. Know up- front what the work will cost be and any variables that may affect a change.

Get a contract in writing. This will protect you if anything goes wrong. A handyman who is willing to put it in writing is typically more trustworthy also. If they aren’t willing to do this, they are not the person to be trusted with your job. Check to see if they have valid liability insurance and get proof. Although you may opt to forego this for smaller jobs, there can be damage if things go awry and you want to be covered.

Hiring a handyman can be very useful in getting a lot of smaller tasks accomplished. They can also be a much more affordable option then hiring a licensed contractor. Check references and skill levels before making a final decision and be sure you are comfortable with the person. Remember that this person will have access to your home so you want to feel secure in your choice.

Main Question:

How can i advertise my handyman services?

Best Answer: by SweetSparkles

Here are a few inexpensive/expensive ways you can advertise your handyman services:

Create posters or flyers. With the permission from your city or town or something, post the flyers or posters throughout the town, such as on store windows or doors, in waiting rooms or front offices. Basically, in places where there’s a lot of people traffic.

Promote it on billboards to catch the attention of people driving.

Television advertisement

Radio advertisement

Create a website online.

If you do create a website, you can share that link on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and your friends will share it with their friends.

Start a blog online.

Put it in the newspaper.

Create business cards. For this I was thinking you can go door to door distributing your business card and letting people know who you are, what you do, what your service is, etc. You can also give a few business cards to your friends and family so they can distribute them to people they know.

1 I heard you can advertise your service on Craigslist. Maybe look into that one?

I hope these help! Good luck! 🙂

Main Question:

How can i get new clients for my handyman business with little money.?

Best Answer: by endorphin_boy415

I have no experience whatsoever with London. That said, however, I would imagine there are some universal practices when it comes to marketing one’s home handyman services. Here are a few ideas:

See if there is a Web site that allows local businesses or companies to advertise their services. Here in the colonies, we have Craigslist. It’s a nationwide posting service that is broken down by specific cities around the nation. So, if I have a business in Atlanta and want to market to local Atlanta residents, I can do so. There may be something similar in London.

Depending on your service, see if local merchants will allow you to advertise your services on their community bulletin board. Again, here in the Colonies, local hardware stores will allow plumbers, landscapers, carpenters and the like to promote their services to the community at large. This is a win win, because it allows the store owner to offer the products and the services needed to install/use them.

Consider investing in a magnetic sign to place on your vehicle. This is a very inexpensive form of advertising. Since you will be driving your vehicle all over, potential customers will be able to see your ad everywhere. Be sure to print up some business cards or flyers to distribute, too, as you will undoubtedly have people asking for your phone number while you are out and about.

Along the same line as the magnetic sign, consider having your company name or logo printed on a hat or on t shirts that you and/or your employees can wear while on the job. This will help create an air of professionalism about your business.

As for looking for actual clients, you might consider promoting yourself to others in related fields. For instance, if you build fences, you might consider contact local landscapers. Landscapers often time work closely with fence builders and deck builders on projects. Give some thought to which fields might be related to yours. In your case, you might want to reach out to remodeling companies, locksmiths, etc.

Good luck. I hope you find some of these thoughts useful. Even if they are coming from a Yank.

Main Question:

How much do “Handyman” services cost?

Best Answer: by busy_kona_b

I’ve paid about $50 per hour. Your best bet is to call a few of them and get estimates. Also, ask for references. I’ve had both good and negative experiences with handyman work. But having a gutter fixed shouldn’t be too complicated.

Main Question:

How much should a handyman cost?

Best Answer: by Snaglefritz

Dang!!!! I guess that good. I just charge by the job. Most times I know what wrong from what they tell me on the phone. People that work, usually I charge around $20 hour on an average, I guess, I know how long it will take. Old retired people on a fixed income, I may get a Pecan/Apple Pie. Sometimes if it a real hard job I will charge an old woman a Kiss and a Hug. Maybe I not charge enough! Ha! Next time I charge a pie, kiss and hug. Need to go up on my rates. ; )

Oh, that in Arkansas.

Main Question:

How much should i charge for handyman services per/hour electrical , plumbing , etc.?

Best Answer: by curvysparkie

I make $32/hr at my job (i’m an electrician), and coworkers (other trades) get paid similarly. Outside, depending on if you’re licensed by the state to do these repairs, cuz you’d be legally responsible for any follow up repairs. $20 to $40 an hour is reasonable, depending on the job: carpentry & painting at the lower end, plumbing and electrical is based on job (EXAMPLES: a light fixture or switch $25; whole house $40/hr; fix a leaky tap $20). And, too, if they’re elderly, cut them a discount. I hope this was helpful. Good luck!

Main Question:

How much should I pay a handyman?

Best Answer: by Corky R

For that specific job, you paid $27/hr. I own and operate a small business, in which I offer many handyman services, laying black plastic under a modular home not being one that I advertise, but I would take it on if asked. My hourly fee is $65/hr., but I doubt that it would take me much longer, if any, than a couple of hours to knock that out. IT’s not a complicated process, a large roll of plastic and some tent stakes and you’re in business.

Around here handymen are paid according to their skil sets. I have many, many skilsets so I demand more than most, and I get it constantly.
